4-day Plein Air to Studio!

August 5, 6, 7, 8 of 2026

Join me in my studio! This workshop teaches how to use a plein air study as both inspiration and reference to create a larger studio painting, guiding students step-by-step from observation to finished work. Students will work from their own plein air study and photo reference, building on prior knowledge from the Fundamentals e-course and Color Relativity.

My plein air pieces are studies of color and light in the landscape - they are an bservation and a record of my experience in that moment and intersection of time. Often, I use those studies in the studio as inspiration and information to create a larger studio piece.

My Minnesota studio sets alongside a beautiful marsh, a sanctuary for birds, spring peepers and endless wildlife. In this workshop, we will begin the first morning with students sitting out along the marsh watching as I demonstrate how I capture the essential elements from life that I will use later in the studio to paint a larger studio piece.

After the morning plein air demonstration, we will move into the studio as I use my plein air study to demonstrate creating a larger studio painting from both my plein air study as well as a printed photo of the scene.

After the demonstrations it’ll be time for you to paint a larger studio piece! You will come to class prepared with your own previously painted Plein air study along with a photo reference of the scene. You will be guided step-by-step as we build a strong conceptual studio painting inspired and informed by your own landscape plein air study and photo reference.
